Guide to Credential Exemptions due to COVID-19

For many nurses and healthcare workers looking to lend a hand during the COVID-19 crisis, the ability to renew certain healthcare credentials creates a barrier to work. Thankfully, several states and license providers are allowing exemptions or extending the expiration date for certain documents.
Here’s the breakdown of exemptions you should know about and where to find more information:
CPR Certification – National (Not required for CNA, GNA, or STNA in most states)
The AHA is allowing an extension of 60 days on the expiration date for renewal. For example, if the recommended renewal date of a CPR card is 3/31/2020, the card can be accepted until 5/31/2020.
American Red Cross is offering a 90-day provisional certification after successfully completing the online portion of the CPR course. The online course can be found here.
Indiana Drivers LicenseThere is a 60-day extension granted for any expiring licenses during the extent of this emergency. Administrative penalties are also being waived.
As of 3/12/2020, any license or certifications set to expire during the current state of emergency are extended until the 30th day after the state of emergency is ended and the health emergency is rescinded.
All driver licenses, ID cards, permits and registrations that are scheduled to expire or are eligible for renewal will not expire until the 30th day after the state of emergency has been lifted.
Any license, certification, permits, and certificates of registration set to expire after the state of emergency was declared on March 10th, 2020 will have an extended expiration date equal to 90 days after the state of emergency has ended. Any license, certification, permits and certificates of registration that expired prior to March 10th, 2020 will continue to have an expired license status.
The issuance of new REAL IDs, if outside the customer’s renewal cycle, has been suspended until the state of emergency is lifted. All driver’s licenses, ID cards, and learners permits that have or will expire in March and April are extended 60 days.
Any license with an expiration date before May 31st, 2020 has a two-month extension. There is a 45 on driver license suspensions for those that are non-safety related.
Registered Nurse license renewal deadlines will be extended from April 30th, 2020 to July 29th, 2020. Practical Nurse license renewal deadlines will be extended from June 30th, 2020 to September 28th, 2020.
Drivers licenses, photo ID cards, and learners permit scheduled to expire between March 16th, 2020 and April 30th, 2020 are now extended through May 31st, 2020.
Drivers licenses and CDLs set to expire during the state of emergency will be extended to 90 days after the declared emergency ends, or December 1st, 2020 — whichever comes sooner.
